The 'Metropolitan Borough of Bury' is a metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester. The borough is composed of six towns; Bury, Ramsbottom, Tottington, Radcliffe, Prestwich and Whitefield. The Coat of Arms (the design based on the old Bury County Borough arms) contains symbols from these six towns.
The borough of Bury is located just to the north of the City of Manchester and the Lancashire districts of Rossendale and Blackburn with Darwen form boundaries with Bury to the north. The borough was created on 1st April 1974 from Lancashire districts and has five towns twinned with it. Before the borough of Bury was formed it was suggested that it be called 'Bury Magna'.
The Lancashire town of Bury was involved with textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution and is famous for its open air market and also for its production of the local dish, Bury Black Pudding. The founder of the Metropolitan Police Service, Robert Peel, was a resident of Bury.
