Oldham Fact File
The 'Metropolitan Borough of Oldham' is a metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester. The borough takes its name from its largest town but also includes the periferal towns of Chadderton, Shaw and Crompton, Royton and Failsworth and also the village of Lees, and the parish of Saddleworth. The borough is divided into twenty electoral wards. The motto on the council's coat of arms reads 'Sapere Aude', which translated from the Latin means 'Dare to be wise'. The borough was created in 1974 from the former County Borough of Oldham, urban districts of Lancashire and the Saddleworth Urban District of the West Riding of Yorkshire.
Historically part of Lancashire, the borough's principal town of Oldham lies on raised land between the rivers Irk and Medlock, about 7 miles northeast of the City of Manchester. The name 'Oldham' is derived from the Saxon and means 'old village or place'. During the Industrial Revolution, Oldham became one of the first industrialised towns in the country, becoming one of the leading centres for the cotton and textile industries.
