The 'Metropolitan Borough of Salford' is a metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester. The town of Salford is the administartive centre of the 'Metropolitan Borough of Salford', which includes the towns of Eccles, Swinton and Pendlebury, Walkden and Irlam. The administrative headquarters of Salford is based at Salford Civic Centre in Swinton. To the south, Salford is bounded by the Manchester Ship Canal, forming a boundary with Trafford and by the River Irwell on the south east, forming a boundary with the city of Manchester.
Salford gained city status in 1926. The Roman road from Manchester to Bury passes through Salford. There have been a number of major Roman finds in the area.
