Manchester Fact File
Manchester is both a city and also a metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester with administrative headquarters at the Manchester City Hall. The town of Manchester gained city status in 1953.
In the first century AD there was a Roman fort in the area called 'Mamucium' and remained a manorial township throughout the Middle Ages.
Manchester boomed during the Industrial Revolution due to textile production. The regional climate was suited to the processing of cotton and expansion of Manchester was so rapid that it became the first industrialised city in the world. The Port of Manchester was created in 1894 with the construction of the Manchester Ship Canal.
