The 'Metropolitan Borough of Tameside' is a metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester and is named after the River Tame, which flows through it. The administrative HQ of Tameside is in Ashton-under-Lyne.
The western edge of the Pennines encroaches on Tameside’s eastern side and the west of the borough is significantly low-lying flatland.
The borough was created on 1st April 1974 and historically the area has been involved in the cotton industry. Tameside has a rich history and there are many listed buildings within the borough. The Borough of Tameside is twinned with a number of places in France, Germany, China and Zimbabwe.
